FAQ

  • EAM is a complete system of medicine, which includes acupuncture, herbal therapy, tui na (acupressure), and qi gong (exercise). The most well known facet is acupuncture, which is the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific acupoints on the body.

  • Acupuncture is based on the theories of the flow of qi (chi) through distinct channels or meridians, that cover the body. Acupuncture basically permits qi to flow to areas that are deficient, or areas that have too much excess stagnation (pain, etc). Acupuncture functions to regulate and restore the body's systems, thus treating & preventing disease by balancing disharmonies.

  • The needles are as fine as a strand of hair, so the insertion is hardly felt, or can sometimes feel like a little pinch. You may experience a heavy sensation around the needle insertion, or a distending, tingling, or electric feeling that may travel up or down from the needle site.

  • The highest quality stainless steel disposable needles are used. The needles come in individually sterilized packets, and are discarded after a single use. No needle is ever reinserted.

  • The number of treatments depends upon the nature, severity and duration of your condition. For acute conditions, you may only need 1-2 treatments. A series of 6-10 treatments may resolve a more chronic issue. However, if you have a condition that has been progressively worsening over the years, it may require treatments over many months. Most patients discover that they enjoy the benefits of acupuncture, even if they are healthy. Acupuncture can stimulate your immune function to keep you healthy. Some people come in for monthly or seasonal 'tune-ups,' just as you would tune-up your car to maintain great function!

  • It is recommended that you eat a light meal or snack within 2-3 hours of your scheduled appointment time. This is to insure that you are grounded and not hungry during the treatment. Acupuncture is an energy medicine, so you will feel energetic shifts in your body as you relax. You can wear loose, comfortable clothing, for instance pants that can roll up to your knees, and short sleeves or tank top shirts. It might be necessary to remove some items of clothing, depending on the treatment. Dr Katin will always respectfully insure you have a towel or sheet over you to maintain your comfort.

Please do not drink alcohol or use non-prescription drugs before your visit. You may be denied treatment if you arrive impaired.

  • The herbs used in Chinese medicine include roots, bark, leaves, branches, flowers, and minerals. Dr. Katin does not use any animal products when prescribing herbs. You may take them in the form of a tea decoction, granule powders that you mix with water, or as a pill or tablet, depending on what suits you best.

  • Each insurance plan is unique, so you should call your insurance company to determine if you have coverage. Dr Katin does not bill insurance directly, but will provide you with a coded invoice at the time of payment that you can submit for reimbursement. You are welcome to use your HSA/FSA card for payment.

Also, please inquire whether your policy includes treatment from a licensed acupuncturist. As peculiar as this sounds, some plans only permit you to have acupuncture from a medical doctor or chiropractor. Please understand that most medical doctors who perform acupuncture only have a certificate in acupuncture, not a degree. This means that they have completed a few weekends and watched some videos for their training. Dr Katin's training was a 4-year doctoral program, plus continuing education classes to improve and deepen her knowledge, and maintain certification with the NCCAOM.

Payment is required in-full at the time of treatment.
